Health is the Most Important Part of Your Career

We’ve all received advice from family, mentors, and co-workers on how to progress and excel in our careers. These suggestions are often valuable and help pave the way for continued success in our professional lives. But how many of you stop to think about your health and how it can both positively and negatively impact your career trajectory?

The bottom line is without your health your career success is inevitably going to end up being short lived. Although the importance of exercise and nutrition is beginning to become part of the daily conversation in the office, you still see way too many examples of employees sacrificing their well-being in pursuit of career aspirations. That’s not to say that you can’t pull a few all-nighters while trying to make a deadline, but if that scenario is becoming the norm then it might be time to step back and evaluate how it’s impacting your livelihood.

Working hard is a given if you want to succeed, but the key is balance and making sure that you can still squeeze in some time to eat properly, exercise, and of course get some sleep. Sure you won’t be able to keep the bodybuilder’s schedule of 8 meals per day and two-a-day exercise sessions, but at least a few minutes of getting the heart rate up and eating as healthy as you can will go a long way.

Bottom line is the expanding waistline is a common sight in the white collar world, do whatever you can to keep it in check and it will not only help you feel better but can bring about confidence which often translates into better career opportunities and success in the workplace.
